...a compelling scenario that will both pull at your heart strings and chill your blood.
The Pink Room is one of those books you won’t like to read alone at night.
The pace is fast, the characters’ motivations real, and the suspense doesn’t let down. --

A double dose of horror! Belongs on the Big Screen!, May 27, 2006  Betty Dravis "BettyDravis@sbcglobal.net, author of 1106 GRAND BOULEVARD & THE TOONIES +" (San Jose, CA)

A double dose of horror that will chill you to the bone! Gripping story! Extremely talented author! Author Mark LaFlamme's debut novel is fantastic. You won't be able to put it down, and I guarantee you'll keep turning pages long after the "witching" hour. What a masterful horror writer!!
The strange house in this story is conceived from the mind of a character mourning the loss of his young daughter, and the ghosts that inhabit it are more spooky than any that have rampaged through your worst nightmares. The pink room at the top of the turret holds its own secrets that will make you gasp with fright. Where is the man? What does a doll-house have to do with the house? And a musical snow dome? And why does our main character inhabit it after the man's death? Who is the mysterious owner of the house? Just what is going on there? But I don't want to give any of the plot of this shocker away, so I'll leave those questions for you to RFY (read for yourself), and simply state my opinion about why I think this author has such a bright future in the literary field: Mark LaFlamme has an excellent command of the English language and his similes are every writer's dream; perfect ... as is everything else about this book! The twists and turns in this story are so well-paced they punch you in the gut at just the right place; the dialogue is realistic; and the plot is unique ... a real grabber! The main protagonist is very likable and so fleshed-out that I felt like I knew him. Even though his obsession was maddening at times, it was very believable. I worried about him throughout the book, and really cared what happened to him.
LaFlamme paints a vivid picture of rural Maine and its people. His characters are original, with each minor character having unique characteristics, perfectly suited to the mood and setting of this fine piece of literature. If this book ever becomes a movie--and it should--the little girl will steal the show. Her frightening part will horrify you. In my opinion, FaFlamme and horror stories go together like ... Well, like Dean Koontz, John Saul, and Stephen King combined. Yes, LaFlamme is THAT good and deserves to be right up there with those terrific horror writers.
As an aside, the book cover is a sinister work of art; it lured me as surely as a creative movie poster lures me into the movie theater. The small book-cover icon on this Amazon page (top, left) does not do the cover justice, so a clearer version is directly beneath that one. To view the cover so that you can see the little girl lurking in the background and clearer details of the "mystery" house, simply run your cursor over the middle photo and it will pop up in the main slot. You'll be glad you did. What a remarkable, descriptive cover. I highly recommend this book, and can't wait for the next one. Hurry up, Mark!

A chilling horror novel that's right up there with Koontz and King!, May 21, 2006

Billie Jean "Miss Glitz" (Reno,Nv, by way of Monaco) For a debut novel this is superb work. Mark LaFlamme certainly appears to have a bright future in the literary world ... if he continues to publish books of this high quality.
The house in the book is a unique creation and the concept and mystery behind The Pink Room is a stroke of genius. This new author from Maine is great at plot, pacing, physical and geographical description, dialogue and all the fine points it takes to be a great writer.
Mark LaFlamme lured me into the house, then into The Pink Room, and before I knew it, he hooked me into one of the most frightening reads of my life. Wow!
I wouldn't tell Stephen King to move over--I looooove that man and ALL his books and movies--but I would definitely say that Mark LaFlamme should soon be standing beside him.
My purple hat with the glitzy headband is off to this new author. Congratulations, Mr. LaFlamme.

I'm still shivering! What a thriller!, April 30, 2006

Reviewer:Flea Catcher (New Mexico) Wow! I couldn't believe how good this author is at writing horror. This book is a surefire winner. I loooooooooove to be scared, and Mark LaFlamme scared me right out of my shocking-orange capris. It was so spine-tingling, I had to sleep with the light on.
I hope he plans many more books. I look forward to more stories like this. How about a blue room; that's my favorite color. LOL ...

A Rising Star in the World of Horror....A Must Read, March 29, 2006

Keith B. Quattrocchi, MD, PhD This is a remarkable and frightening novel. Mark Laflamme's "The Pink Room" takes you into an all too believable world where the lines between life and death meld into one continuum. The effect of the ensuing events is both unexpected and terrifying. Once I began reading this novel, set in northern Maine, I could not put it down. I was struck by how quickly Laflamme's style of writing pulled me out of my world and into his. One of the many unique features of Laflamme's book is his ability to take what science has taught us and weave it into a plot of terror. The story and characters come to life, and the science forces you forward into his terrifying world. In this way he creates a universe disturbingly distorted and terrifying, but at the same time, undeniable and real. The style is fast paced and riveting. Don't expect the obvious, expect instead to be surprised at most every turn. I give it five stars and expect to hear a great deal about this rising star over the next few years. A must read.

Terrific new author, January 24, 2006

Holly Rahmlow "hollytrr"  I generally don't read horror, but I work with this author and really wanted to see if his book was as good as his newspaper columns. So I lit every light in the room (on a sunny day) and dove in. I was expecting something unusual from a guy who has his desk decorated for Halloween 365 days a year, and I got it. Wonderfully written and way too real for this scaredy cat. Eeek!

Scary and readable, January 22, 2006

Diane Fuller  If you like a good scare, you'll love this book. With a creepy Maine setting (which has certainly worked for Stephen King)and a very readable style this story will make you think twice about opening closet doors or visiting the basement. It's full of shivers down your spine but the best one comes on the last page. Definitely worth reading.

A work of art, January 16, 2006

blogophobe (USA)A book so enveloping, it makes you forget about the world around you! Excellent writing. You'll only put it down to eat and sleep.

Wow - a definite "Must Read", December 17, 2005

Tina L. Morin "fussy reader" (Lewiston, Maine) - If you've enjoyed the work of another Maine horror writer, hold on to your socks, because there's a new guy in town. The Pink Room combines excellent characterization and often terrifying descriptions with an original storyline which makes the read as a whole truly entertaining and enjoyable. Add the twists and turns, and it becomes profound and thought-provoking as well. Worthy of purchase - you won't be disappointed.

Don't-miss new author!, December 14, 2005

CoreyDina (Maine USA) - See all my reviews

Excellent read! Creepy, compelling, chilling. This book will quickly captivate you and rush you along to a thriller ending.

Chilling...captivating..Pink Room is an excellent read, December 14, 2005

Gail E. Tarr "avid reader" (Maine) Pink Room lures you in and keeps you hooked as you follow Jonathan Cain's quest to bring back his deceased wife Kimberly. The story, at some points, sends chills up your spine--while in other places, it's seems as though you can't read fast enough to find out what will happen next. It's a great read that I would recommend to everyone I know.

Like King at his best, LaFlamme doesn't stop at visual terror. He takes us inside the diseased minds of some of the most psychologically intriguing characters I've ever seen. We all have our demons, but we keep them inside. Not LaFlamme. He flaunts them in hideous detail.

§         You scared the sh** out of me tonight!  That little gray girl lisping..."You touched my stuff"...ha...thanks for the "good" scare! You have no idea how much I'm enjoying being scared! Thanks for the great story. Can't wait, yet, dread, getting to the end.

My sister-in-law sent me a copy of The Pink Room, I read it in one day and scared myself silly. Excellent, emotionally horrifying....I'm not a huge fan of this genre, typically stick to Koontz at the furthest, but this was wild. I particularly like the end......Buchanan has the right idea!

§         It's brilliant. Equal to much of what I've read from Stephen King, and superior to some. The characters are believable.  The descriptions are flawless.  I was there - at the house - and frankly, I forgot that I was reading.  I was too caught up in the story. Oh...and did I say thought-provoking?  Profound? Last line of the book - perfect.  I know this, because when I read it, I stopped and thought about the ramifications of the line.  Carried it through in my head and shivered.  I am truly awed by LaFlamme’s talent.  He has a gift - whether masses ever read the results, whether money is made or fame is achieved – he must use it.  If he has more of this type of thing in him, and if there is any logic at all to the business of writing, he will not only succeed, he will succeed in a big way.

§         I just finished.  WOW! I am speechless, this is a first.  WOW, the ending was not what I was expecting AT ALL!!! It was really great.  Kudos to you, I am so impressed.

§            The expectation of finding a greasy girl ghoul in the closet is something my overactive imagination is going to have to live with along with the spectre of Victor Pascow and his grinning, wrecked head floating down the hall at me last thing at night before I enter the bedroom alone in the dark. I assume you   remember Victor from Pet Sematary. So what am I saying?  I'm saying this…your book is damned good.  It's hard to put down, It's going to stay with me (whether I want to or not!) and the fact that it has the same effect on me as a King novel is about the highest compliment I can think of to pay it.  My only concern is for your safety if you find yourself stranded in Aroostook County and find yourself among folks who have read the book.

                                                                                            -- Diane Fuller, Auburn

§         If they make a movie of this terrifying book -- and they should -- I may never listen to Beethoven again!!!

§         Never have I seen a writer so fascinated by death and the world beyond. Edgar Allen would be proud. Proud and scared stiff!

§         We all have our demons, but we keep them inside. Not LaFlamme. He flaunts them in hideous detail.

        What a sick mind!!!

§         I have to say this, I have described the book to two of my closest buddies and we are all in agreement.  This would make one hell of a movie. I am so serious.  I thought about this all of last night and if someone doesn't pick this up and approach you about it once it has been out there circulating, I would be stunned.  It really was excellent.  Now that I have had a chance to let it sink in a little, I am even more in love with the book then when I first finished it, if that's even possible!!

I wanted to share with you how much I enjoyed your book!  It had me on the edge of my seat and I finished it in 2 days --- no mean feat considering I have 3 & 5 yr old daughters.  I found Cain to be a likable main character and felt sympathetic to his heartbreaking loss of his wife.  GREAT book!  Keep 'em coming!!
